Long-term horsebox hire suits riders who are out most weekends from spring to autumn. Instead of booking box after box, you keep one vehicle for weeks or months at a time.
That brings real advantages. You learn the box, your horse learns it too, and spontaneous clinics or extra shows no longer depend on availability.
However, a longer hire also brings more responsibility. This guide explains when monthly hire makes sense, how to plan the season around it and how to look after the box while it’s in your care.
How long-term horsebox hire works
Long-term horsebox hire simply means booking a box for weeks or months, rather than single days. At Horsebox For Rent, we offer daily, weekly and monthly hire, so you can match the booking to your plans.
Insurance is included, and the box is cleaned and safety-checked before your hire begins. Your quote is clear and fixed, so you know the hire cost for the whole period from the start.
What changes compared with day hire
- The box lives with you. It’s parked at your yard or home between outings.
- Day-to-day care is yours. You keep it clean, check it regularly and report faults.
- Your timetable is your own. You can go to an extra clinic without phoning round.
- Your horse settles into one box. The same space, smells and routine every trip.
When long-term horsebox hire beats booking day by day
The deciding factor is how often you’ll actually use the box. So start with a realistic count of your outings, not your hopes.
| Factor | Booking day by day | Long-term horsebox hire |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Occasional shows, clinics and vet trips | Most weekends, plus midweek lessons or clinics |
| Availability | Book early for summer weekends | The box is already at your yard |
| Flexibility | Each outing needs a booking | Go whenever your plans change |
| Responsibility | Minimal; collect and return | Regular checks, cleaning and safe parking |
| Familiarity | Possibly a different box each time | One box all season |
In short, if you’d be booking most weekends anyway, ask for a monthly quote. Then compare it with the total of the day hires you’d otherwise book.
A quick way to decide
Write down every outing you’re planning for the season, month by month. Include shows, clinics, lessons away, vet visits and any holidays with your horse.
If several months have an outing most weekends, long-term horsebox hire for those months is likely to be simpler and better value. Quieter months can stay on daily hire.
Planning your competition season around the box
A good season plan uses the right hire for each part of the year. Outdoor competition is busiest from spring to early autumn, while winter tends to be quieter.
| Time of year | Typical activity | Hire that often fits |
|---|---|---|
| Late winter | Clinics, indoor dressage, getting fit | Daily hire as needed |
| Spring to late summer | Shows, events or qualifiers most weekends | Monthly hire |
| Early autumn | Championships, end-of-season shows | Weekly or monthly hire |
| Late autumn to winter | Winter series, lessons, vet visits | Daily hire |
That pattern isn’t fixed, of course. A rider aiming at summer championships may want monthly hire from early spring. On the other hand, someone with a young horse may only need a few weeks of intensive outings.
Riders around Sawbridgeworth and the Stort valley often have plenty of venues within reach, so monthly hire can fill quickly with shows and lessons.
Choosing the right box for a whole season
Over months, the wrong box becomes a daily frustration. So think carefully about size, licence and payload before you commit.
- 3.5t boxes drive on a standard car licence and suit one or two horses. They’re easy to park and manoeuvre at busy venues.
- 5t and 7.5t boxes need C1 entitlement. They carry more weight and more kit, which helps over a long season.
- Payload matters more over a season, because kit tends to accumulate. Keep the box tidy and carry only what you need.
Also think about your drivers. If more than one person will drive during the hire, make sure everyone holds the right licence and is approved before they get behind the wheel. The GOV.UK guide to driving licence categories sets out which licence covers which weight.

Looking after the box during long-term horsebox hire
With long-term horsebox hire, the box is in your care for weeks at a time. A short weekly routine keeps it safe and roadworthy, and it spots small problems before they become big ones.
Weekly checks
Pick the same day each week, ideally the day before your main outing. Then work through the checklist below.
- Tyres. Check pressures, look for cuts or bulges and check the tread. For a 3.5t box, the legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread. TyreSafe explains how to check properly.
- Lights. Walk round with a helper to check every light, indicator and brake light.
- Screen and mirrors. Top up screenwash and clean the mirrors and windows.
- Ramp and partitions. Check springs, hinges, fastenings, pins and tie rings.
- Floor. Look for damp patches or soft spots, and report anything unusual immediately.

Report faults straight away
If something isn’t right, don’t drive the box until you’ve spoken to us. A small fault reported early is easy to deal with; one ignored for a month can end a season.
Keep it clean between outings
Muck out after every trip, even a short one. Wet bedding and urine left sitting on a floor do real damage over time.
Afterwards, leave the ramp and doors open for a while, where it’s safe to do so, so the floor dries properly.
Budgeting for the season beyond the hire
Your quote covers the hire itself. However, a season of competing brings other running costs, and it helps to list them early.
- Fuel. Over a season, this is usually the biggest cost after the hire and the entries.
- Tolls and crossings. Routes south often use the Dartford Crossing, which carries its own charge.
- Your yard. Some yards charge for parking a lorry or box, so ask before the hire starts.
- Your own insurance. Check that your horse insurance covers travel and competing.
- Cleaning supplies. A stiff broom, a shovel, a hose fitting and a safe disinfectant.
As a result, you’ll have a realistic season budget rather than a pleasant surprise that turns sour in August.
Parking and security over weeks and months
A horsebox parked in one place for weeks needs a safe home. So agree with your yard where it will live before your hire starts.
- Choose a secure spot. Ideally inside a locked yard, or somewhere overlooked and well lit.
- Keep the keys safe. Don’t leave them in the cab, under a wheel arch or in the tack room.
- Take valuables out. Remove tack, rugs and equipment between outings rather than storing them on board.
- Leave room to load. Park where you can lower the ramp onto level, firm ground.
- Watch for soft ground. A box left on grass through a wet spell can sink and get stuck.
Riders in Broxbourne and the Lea Valley often keep boxes at shared yards. In that case, make sure the yard owner knows the box is there and who is allowed to move it.
Getting the most from a season with one box
Long-term horsebox hire really pays off when you plan to use it well. Here are a few habits that make a season smoother.
Keep a box kit permanently packed
Keep a small set of essentials in the box: a muck skip, shovel, broom, spare lead rope and first aid kits. Then you only need to add the horse-specific kit for each outing.
Build travel into your training
Short, calm trips between shows keep your horse relaxed about travelling. For example, box to a lesson midweek, so show days feel routine.
If you’re new to competing, our first competition trip checklist covers the show-day side in detail.
Keep a simple log
Note each journey, any problems and anything you’d do differently. By the end of the season, you’ll know exactly how you use a box and what you’d book next year.
Plan for the unexpected
Horses get injured, plans change and seasons end early. Equally, a good season can run longer than you planned, with an extra qualifier or a late championship.
If that happens, talk to us as soon as you know. We’ll explain your options clearly, and it’s always easier with notice.
Handing the box back at the end of the season
The end of a long-term horsebox hire deserves a proper finish. Plan a morning for it, rather than squeezing it in after your final show.
First, take everything out: tack, rugs, haynets, buckets and the box kit. Then muck out completely, sweep the floor and clean the cab.
Give the floor time to dry before you hand it back, too. A wet floor hides problems, and it’s the part of a horsebox that suffers most from neglect.
Finally, walk round the box and note anything you’ve noticed during the hire. Telling us about a sticky latch or a worn tyre helps the next rider, and it keeps the handover straightforward.
